I have been told many times, by many people, that I should look into getting paid on Substack. After a lot of procrastination, I have added a pay option to my subscriptions. I very much appreciate my hundreds of subscribers, and I’ve been told that I’m well past the amount where I should “go paid.”
So, after a good deal of difficulty, I think I figured things out, with the generous help of my fellow Substack author Margaret Anna Alice. I’ve already seen some paid subscriptions, so the option is clearly being given to new subscribers. However, I don’t know any other way to message the subscribers I already have, other than to write a post like this.
I am not good at soliciting support. I’m not sure how this paid thing is supposed to work. Some writers simply keep all their stuff out there for free, and appreciate whoever wants to make their support financial. Others save at least some posts for paid subscribers only. I’m torn here. I’m leaning towards writing weekly for all to see, both paid and free.
If you feel it’s not a good investment to pay for something you can read for free, I understand. But if you want to help out, I’d be very grateful. I’m a full time writer, doing exactly what I dreamed of doing. But I’m basically being paid like a fast food worker. So it will not only be appreciated, but will help me keep doing what I’m doing. Besides writing on Substack, I spend hours each day researching and writing my next book, which will be Hidden History 3: More From the American Memory Hole.
I’m definitely not good at this, but considering that so many of you have been kind enough to become my subscribers, it just makes sense to notify you all of the paid option. I thank each and every one of you for reading and commenting on my work, whether you generously contribute something or remain a free subscriber.
Hi Don,
You are one of my favorites. Your research, and analysis would be a bargain at 10x what I’m paying. I just ordered “Hidden History” on audio book and ordering a hard copy as well.
As an owner operator trucker, I listen to many podcasts/radio shows and when I hear you’re going to be a guest, that show gets priority, i.e. Monday nights on RenseRadio and Saturdays on America Unplugged on Rokfin.
Happy to contribute.

Read (and loved) your first two Hidden History books. Will preorder your third as soon as it’s available to do so.
