The only way to ever get any meaningful reform in the medical/pharma industry is to get government virtually out of the business entirely. No more laws or regulations on medical care (other than a few basic laws to ensure a minimum level of safety), no laws on medical insurance, and no Medicare/Medicaid. Another thing that has to happen is to separate medical insurance from employers. There is no more inherent reason for medical insurance to be paid by an employer than there is for an employer to pay for homeowners insurance or automobile insurance. No one would expect their employer to pay for automobile insurance, but most people expect their employer to pay for medical insurance. This practice started during WW 2 when the government set wage and price controls. But employers who wanted to entice good employees figured out that they could circumvent those controls by paying for employees’ health care, and the practice continued even after the wage and price controls were removed at the end of the war. This practice has caused innumerable problems. So government is directly or indirectly responsible for most of our problems with health care affordability and health insurance affordability.

Of course there is no chance that we will ever get that reform, just as there is no chance that we will ever get any meaningful reform with our justice system. There are far too many corrupt or greedy politicians, bureaucrats, lawyers, doctors, pharma executives, insurance company executives, etc who profit from the system the way it is now. Also, most people assume it has to be the way it is now, just because that is all they have ever known, and they don’t have enough imagination to visualize how the system could be improved.

Another great piece. Thank you.

By the way, last year, as a part of a standard physical check up which I try to achieve annually for better health,, I went to my primary doc at one of the large HMOs in the nation, and said, hey do you mind if I get a coronary calcium scan? I would like to see what my score is. So, I am thinking this (heart disease) is the #1 killer in the nation, perhaps as serious as diabetes and obesity, this should not be a difficult request.

He looks at me, and sees that I am a pretty healthy guy and says, oh no, we would only do that for your if you had symptoms.. So I am thinking, wow, I need SYMPTOMS to get a CAC score? Like a heart attack or something?!?! You would think that this would a STANDARD test now that we have the technology. What an upside down world we live in. Thanks for letting me rant.

Not having health insurance or Medicare will keep you healthy and safe. All my family and friends that have passed were victims of the MIC.

Super article. Insightful, as always.

I live in France and, it’s true what one reads, healthcare here is amazing (I’m from the US with family still there so what you write resonates with me).

However, private services are starting to creep into the French system. The government no longer pays everything so we all need to get “mutuels” (private insurance supplement). I’m 100% sure that government payment share will drop and the supplemental insurance premiums will go up.

Why? Because Big Pharma increasingly is taking over the world...or at least our governments.

One needs look no further than, as you write, lockdowns etc....

Our only power to combat this is awareness & mobilisation of the masses. For as Caesar so eloquently said with his “divide & conquer”, a divided masses means we get screwed. Time & time again.

Keep up the writing!
