You can't go home again. You know that.

My family came legally to the US from Germany when I was 10 years old. I was immediately enrolled in a local (back then, only English-speaking) school with mostly Jewish students. I was petrified and constantly called a Nazi. The upside? I became a fluent, accent-free English speaker within six months. I doubt the same can be said for any of the proprietors or customers of the recent wave of immigrant shops in Annandale. I also doubt they care. As you wrote, learn Hindi, because they're not going to learn English. Assimilation has become as antiquated a concept as not shoplifting.

Oh yes, those Nazis were such bad people. They bombed cities into ruins. They sunk helpless passenger liners killing thousands of people... oh wait, it was the Allies that did that.

I don't know what the temperature of antisemitism is on this substack, although I do get the feeling it may be quite high. I should clarify that I am not an antisemite. I believe profoundly in live and let live. Ya wanna be a Zionist? A nutcake Muslim? A Bible-thumping Fundamentalist? A purple-wigged tranny? Have at it, folks — but please shut the eff up and just leave everybody alone.

It was definitely difficult to be a German immigrant in a sea of American Jews. I was ten years old and had no defense mechanisms. I think it's important to note that I learned to survive (by the grace of G*d) and that I learned much from my new Jewish "friends," whose families' achievements and cohesion far surpassed my own. Jews are clique-ish, as are many folks. In hindsight, I wish my blowing-it-all-up, immigrant parents had valued family and tribe more than they did.

Expand full comment

Always tricky reading temperatures of that type.

It may be tangentially possible though. I'm know I'm going 6 gorillion miles out on a limb here, but it may be that the temperature loosely correlates with the prevalence and success of activities engaged in by entities such as.....

Barbara Lerner Spectre?

I hope someone can explain live and let live to her. She seems not to have come to full appreciation of the concept.

Expand full comment

But fear not. Fortunately, my reading is coming in quite low.

Thankfully, Ms. Spectre seems to be just one isolated, ineffectual, inconsequential rando that speaks for no one, represents nothing and has enjoyed no success. Anywhere.

This is why this article of Mr. Jeffries article is such a fun piece of light comedy. He has such an imagination!

That does sound rough. My kids are half-German and they get called Nazi's all the time.

Leara, is it antisemitism or xenophobia? As you say, Jews are clique-ish and subject to being seen as “the other”.

A worthwhile story: My wife and I live in rural Mexico. She’s a dual-citizen, so my white tuchas end up in many places where I’m the only güero.

Yesterday, we went to a kid’s Rosary that was set-up by the local priest as an alternative to more pagan Day of the Dead activities. On the way over, my wife said, “The new priest doesn’t like gringos.”

On the way home, I asked her about it. “He thinks that gringos contaminate Mexican traditions.” I said, “There’s been talk lately about American Halloween gaining traction in Mexico.”

So that’s how it works. I’m “The Gringo”—the rough equivalent of “The Jew”. (It doesn’t help that Mr. Trump flirts with ill-advised military/economic action against Mexican cartels!) It feels sh*tty, but what can I do?

Fun fact: I was raised by a Seventh Day Adventist mother, and as a result was exempt from attending school on Saturdays, as was the custom in Germany in mid-century. My classmates called me a Jew. Magically and at head-turning speed, once I moved to NY, I shape-shifted from being a Jew to being a Nazi. Fun times.

DAMN, DONALD (my dad’s name)! You wrote an outstanding commentary describing exactly how I feel! When I’ve driven through my hometown (3rd generation) of San Francisco-I refuse to go to SF for any reason-it breaks my heart!

If my parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents saw SF now, they would surely sob.

EVERYTHING that made SF wonderful, comforting, nostalgic, no longer exists, especially the Italian, Irish neighborhoods…so sad.

On a side note, I was an employee of SF for 23 years, and I was fired (forced to retire years early) for non-CONvid compliance.

..."But it’s been bombed out. By our own leaders."...I go through similar episodes when I see my 97 year old father still living in the house I was raised in just outside the Detroit city limits. He has lived there 70 years. The neighborhood has changed by leaps and bounds with a few old establishments still alive, I guess.

But government has led us into the abyss as it attempts to destroy the US or the thought of it. I imagine that it is worse in the east and not quite as bad in the middle. Forget the wasted coast on the left. As I get older, in a way passing on won't be so bad since I am considered to be a piece of garbage by my vaunted leaders. They are the scum of the earth.

Your sense of loss would be felt by anyone from any tribe around the globe if their society was flooded by other people and what they knew was erased. If Singapore was suddenly faced with a majority Indian population, it wouldn't go down well with the Chinese nor if Uganda became majority Chinese, even if the Chinese brought a lot of good restaurants, would the Ugandans start chanting how diversity is now their greatest strength.

But then, those countries aren't governed by an alien tribe that hates them and feels safer when there is no majority tribe outside of their own. So, our religious police, the ADL, states that whites wanting to stay a majority is white supremacy but it is OK for Jews to want to be a majority in Israel.

Alas, no other tribe except whites would embrace having their country and descendants' futures taken from them. The more white an area is, the more whites embrace the great replacement while calling it racist to say we are being replaced. Besides, immigrants bring new restaurants with them, don't they, bigot?

Throughout history two of the main purposes of governments were to stop invasions and keep the people safe. Now our government encourages and facilitates the invasion while cracking down on bigots who don't like the resulting crime.

M, lots of people claim it is a Christian trait to be welcoming and understanding.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Then in school we were all taught that the "white men" stole the native's land and tried to genocide them out of existence. We were taught that white Christians burned people at the stake and persecuted non-Christians. Then were taught about slavery. Then we were taught that Americans (Christian boys) were invading Indochina and murdering native Vietnamese. -So we can feel the burden of guilt being heaped up on us., and feel the contradiction between our Christian principle of love one another and reality.

Our conscience has been weaponized against us to feel collective guilt, rather than

rational constructive criticism and cultural self-defense.

When the Syrian "refugees" starting pouring into Germany in 2015, did any German protest? Or did the Germans greet them at the train stations with open arms and teddy bears? It was the latter. So programming complete.

These "refugees" were greeted in Bulgaria & Greece with tear gas & rubber bullets. So proves my previous point. Germans/Northern Europeans are pathologically suicidal while Bulgarians & Greeks aren't. During the next 5 years that will become even more apparent.

This is a Northern European character trait, I.e being a cuck. Southern & Eastern Europeans don't have this character trait as they are openly racist & xenophobic. This forces immigrants to assimilate or leave. Italy/Spain will still be Italy/Spain in a hundred years, Sweden/Denmark won't. The Northern Europeans also suffer from suicidal groupthink. Just look at their Government funded TV channels. Americans in blue states have the same issue. Lots of historical immigrants from those countries in the blue/swing states, not so much in the red states, so this destructive suicidal pattern of behaviour gets passed down from generation to generation. They should all go to group therapy.

I think it's been a case of cultural programming, Michelle. White Americans have been conditioned for decades, by movies, television, and popular music. Being from Gen X the only Hollywood movies I watch anymore were made in the 80s or earlier because the nostalgia they evoke is for some reason comforting to me. But at the same time the death of heritage America triggers moments of deep sorrow.

Some of you might be surprised to know that my students that were in the late 90s and the 2000s would express sorrow to me after watching old movies especially the traditional Christmas ones. They would tell me that watching the made them sad because they never knew a society like that with a stay at home mother and a loving father who took care of the family. Many of them have family lives that are totally shattered and splintered. They would ask me if I had such a home life where everybody sat around the dinner table and talked, etc., and I would tell them yes and they would say to me that I was very very lucky. So they feel the nostalgia too when forced to look at the evidence of the America of the past. They grieve that they never had the experience at all.

Donald, I'm praying for your family. You write of nostalgia better than anyone I have ever read. You took me back to that time. "Dine and dash"...I had forgotten about that. I knew young men who did that quite a bit...never did it myself...it was a guy thing. I saved green stamps for a projector so I could watch 16mm films from my local library (I loved old movies even as a kid) but when I finally realized I would never save enough stamps, I bought a bedside rug and a fancy trashcan. A few years later I did actually buy a projector for ten bucks at a school surplus auction.

My dad came to America in the fifties. He assimilated because he had no other choice. He went to the Norwegian store every couple of months to buy canned reindeer meatballs etc., went to his ethnic lodge every weekend for dancing, and never lost his heavy accent...but he started a business, and learned to do everything an American businessman would have to do. He read complicated books in English.

Thirty years later when I married a Guatemalan I could contrast the difference. In my area, Guatemalans never have to learn English. They live parallel lives. The cheapskate businesses that employ them usually have another immigrant sycophant as department head...whose job is to keep all dissent at the bottom level...never to reach the management level. I have had the misfortune to work in some of these jobs, and I can assure you, a White person is treated like s*** in such a situation. Anyway, all these changes are also soon to be swept away. Chaos is coming...Rome is falling...the barbarians are at the gate

I remember picking up pop bottles on the side of the road as a kid and cashing them in at the grocery store for a nickel apiece. I would use that money to buy candy, soda, and comic books. I too would buy the 80 page comics for a quarter. The regular comics were also twelve cents when I started buying them and then went to fifteen cents. I think the Vietnam War was the start of increasing inflation along with the elimination of gold to back the dollar. I read everything that came into my hands, LOL.

The two towns I grew up in are in the same sad state now. Lots of signs in other languages along with the look of dilapidation and a sense of deep loss. The old movie theaters that I haunted as a kid have all been torn down. I felt more of a loss when they razed the one that my dad went to as a kid and that he took us to over the years.

The stockyards were by the railroad tracks. Civilization stopped at the Lancaster SHopping Center. The Lancaster Bible College was a bumpkin affair that ran a float parade from the local Presbyterian Church to the soccer field- it was the highlight of September. Good Dairy Barn served the Best Ice Cream On Earth- a Triple Dip Banana Float Sundae cost a whopping 39 Cents. The Fruitville Pike (I never really figured out where Fruitville was, if it ever existed) meandered between cows and corn.

Today, Lancaster Bible College is a bloated Cardboard Community trying to pretend it is State College. Good's Dairy Barn is long gone. The Fruitville Pike has been straightened, expanded to six lanes, and looks like a suburb of Baltimore. Goods Dairy is long gone, replaced by a medical complex. Watt and Shand is now a gaudy hotel, while the rest of Downtown is Gov't subsidized hell, gov't buildings, courthouse annexes, and I-phone shops. This conquering strategy, aided by the whores in DC, needed to flood the land with cheap labor and to undermine the cohesion of the white, middle class communities . Diabolical.

Unfortunately, many conservatives lack the backbone to argue against unneeded legal immigration. With few exceptions, the pundits bend over backwards denying the obvious Great Replacement Theory/ Fact.
