I had not driven down 122nd Ave for 17 years. I had to keep asking myself if I was dreaming. The entire length I drove was hideous...garbage on street and sidewalks, abandoned cars, and mobs of people sleeping/passed out on the sidewalks. I have driven through Kenya, and that is exactly what it reminded me of...a Kenyan town away from the tourist areas. I can tell you, I was shook up for days afterwards. How could this change happen in 17 years?

I played Little League Baseball and basketball in Annandale, and spent a lot of time there. For more than thirty years, it has resembled occupied territory. I met many who essentially fled our country for the very descriptions you write.... some to live more affordably on Soc Sec. Listening to their stories, perceptions and experiences as full time “residente permanente” was engaging, as was sincerely respecting, learning and living among the locals. Catching the bus on the busy Carretera highway to go anywhere was as foreign, exiting and challenging as any of the culture educations! Carrying groceries by bus in return, a culture shock education as was investigating qualifying for residency. Our borders are literally an invasion free for all, while Mexico demands proof of monthly income of 4k, proof of your Social Security or pension, at least $172K in savings, to become a permanent resident. By comparison, your essay today and what has happened and is happening to America makes me question if moving to Mexico might have been the better choice. My wife's family, father's side, has a bit of history with those communists. Her father is Hungarian. He emigrated to the US to escape the communists, I believe, and as i understand sometime after the uprising which I now understand began at a radio station. His entry into the States unfortunately required joining the military whereupon he was shipped off to Vietnam where he was a paratrooper and thankfully made it home at least in decent physical shape. Well, until the early 2000's when he came down with an awful disease, scleroderma, which his wife seemed to think had something to do with exposure to agent orange and other toxic substance in Vietnam. It was a very quick demise and cut my time short in gaining more of his knowledge of what took place in his life.
Sorry about your wife's father and what those bastards did to him and so many other good men in the Vietnam war. It was the Hungarians and the Latvians who fought valiantly with the Germans until the bitter end against the demonic forces of, "Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity."

This is an excellent summary of where we're at, having passed the peak, now on the downslope we seem to have stumbled over a cliff in our present "woke" culture.

As simplistic as the old "Left vs. Right" political classifications were, however, all of that is no longer relevant. Now, the pertinent divide is whether you're aligned with that cause, or not.
For me, having always wondered about whether God, and the Christian Bible, was real, or just an ancient belief system intended to control and quiet the population through lessons in morality, and avoiding the consequences of immoral behavior. Now I realize that they are real, and now I know He and It is real, because all of what is happening now was predicted thousands of years ago. It's all in the Bible, and all anyone needs to do to prove it is "Look It UP."
The "Trials and Tribulations" it warned us about are now upon us, each of us as individuals and, unfortunately, the nation and world as a whole.

I don't judge any other culture, but obviously if immigrants aren't even asked to assimilate, it will cause tremendous friction, when common practices- for instance, throwing the trash into the streets in some countries south of the border, make their way into America. Why feminists don't clash with Muslim immigrants who come from a culture where women have been stoned to death for showing their face, etc., is impossible to explain in a non-conspiratorial way. Immigration worked 100 years ago, because those Italians and others immersed themselves into the general culture, while adding some refreshing pizazz of their own. Like pizza. Thanks!

We’ve been watching the country fall into a third world society for a long time. Each generation says the same thing but it’s been increasing rapidly since 9/11.
I've been plotting an escape for years. I started a garden. I threw my TV away. I don't give a shit about professional sports. I don't own a washer and dryer anymore. I'm dumping my phone as soon as it dies. I don't think I need a car and I'm not sure I even need a house. After this war and we win and the enemy is dead, I don't think I'll have the energy to help re-build it. I would like to experience what freedom feels like. Good write.
